Older homes & buildings

Steam

The boiler boils water. Steam rises up the pipes to the radiators, and the water runs back down.
You’ll hear it working: clanks and hisses.
Common in older houses and buildings.

Most new boilers

Hot water

The boiler heats water and a pump pushes it through radiators or baseboard.
Quieter.
Today’s high-efficiency boilers are this kind.

Not sure which you have?

Look for a little glass tube on the side of the boiler with water in it. If it’s there, you have steam.
