Refrigerant
My AC uses R-410A. Do I have to replace it?
No. You can keep repairing an R-410A system for as long as it lasts, including big repairs like a compressor or a matching outdoor unit. Nothing in the new rules makes you replace working equipment. R-410A may get harder to find over the next few years as production winds down.
My AC uses R-22. Can you still fix it?
We service existing R-22 systems. R-22 is no longer newly produced or imported for normal service in the U.S. Existing systems can still use previously produced stock and reclaimed refrigerant. Availability and price vary. A recharge does not repair a leak.
If the R-22 outdoor unit dies, you can’t swap in a new R-410A one, because the old indoor coil won’t work with it. That’s usually when a new system makes sense. Refrigerant, explained
What are R-454B and R-32?
The refrigerants in most new central air systems since 2025. They replace R-410A in new equipment. They’re rated mildly flammable, so the equipment made for them is built differently. That’s why you can’t put them in a system built for R-410A, or the other way around.
If anyone offers to “convert” your old system to a new refrigerant, say no.
Can I still buy a new R-410A system?
Qualifying R-410A equipment manufactured or imported before January 1, 2025 can still be installed while that inventory lasts. Ask what is available and appropriate for your system.
Furnaces
Are 80% furnaces being banned?
An 80% furnace remains an option today. We’ll check which replacement suits your house and its venting. A 95% condensing furnace may qualify for utility rebates, but needs suitable venting and a drain. You do not have to replace a working furnace just because a new-equipment standard is scheduled.
So should I get a 95% furnace?
It depends on your house, venting and installation cost. We can compare the options. 80% or 95%, side by side
Money
Is there still a federal tax credit for a new furnace or AC?
No. The federal 25C credit for furnaces, central air, and heat pumps ended for anything installed after December 31, 2025. If you put a system in during 2025, claim it on your 2025 return (IRS Form 5695). If a quote you got this year still counts the credit, the quote is out of date.
We’re not tax advisors, so check with whoever does your taxes.
What rebates can I get?
Rebates depend on your utility account, equipment eligibility, installation date, required paperwork and available funds. Check the program requirements for your quote. Check your utility bill.
