Furnaces
80% or
95%?
Many 80% furnaces use a chimney vent. A condensing furnace needs approved venting and a condensate drain; the layout depends on your home.
Standard
80%
Of every dollar of gas, about 80¢ becomes heat in the house.
- Many installations use a chimney vent; the layout depends on your home.
- No utility rebate. Rebates start at 95%.
High efficiency
95%
Of every dollar of gas, about 95¢ becomes heat in the house.
- Needs approved venting and a condensate drain; the layout depends on your home.
- May qualify for your gas company’s furnace rebate. Check the program requirements.
- These furnace rebate programs require at least 95% AFUE on qualifying equipment. Rebates depend on your utility account, equipment eligibility, installation date, required paperwork and available funds. Check the program requirements for your quote. This year’s amounts
- In Chicago, ask about the chimney. When a 95% furnace replaces one that shared the chimney with the water heater, Peoples Gas requires a chimney liner for the rebate. If your house needs one, it’s on the quote.
- Sized to the house, not the sticker. Too big and it turns on and off all day. Too small and it never catches up on the coldest nights.
Central air
New
central air.
What’s different about a new system now.
- New refrigerant Most new central-air systems use R-454B or R-32. Qualifying R-410A equipment manufactured or imported before January 1, 2025 can still be installed while that inventory lasts. Ask what is available and appropriate for your system.
- Matched halvesThe outdoor unit and the indoor coil have to be a certified match, with an AHRI rating to prove it. The rebate paperwork asks for it, and it’s how the system gets the efficiency on the label.
- Both halves countReplacing the outdoor unit and the indoor coil together counts as a new system, even if the copper lines stay.
- R-22 system died?A new R-410A outdoor unit can’t go on an old R-22 coil. That’s usually when the whole system gets replaced. Refrigerant, explained
Paying for it
Paying
for it.
- Rebates. NIPSCO offers $250 on a qualifying 95% furnace and $550 to $650 on eligible new central air installed by November 30, 2026. Illinois utilities have their own programs. Rebates depend on your utility account, equipment eligibility, installation date, required paperwork and available funds. Check the program requirements for your quote. See this year’s amounts
- The federal tax credit is gone. It ended for anything installed after December 31, 2025. If a quote still counts it, the quote is out of date. More in the FAQ
